Scheurman’s K9 Academy is a full service dog training organization. We teach and use the compulsive dog training methods. These methods are similar to methods used by trainers like Caser Milano, Tom Rose, William Koehler, Captain Haggerty, Barbara Woodhouse, and other great trainers.
We use a combination of proven training methods, as well as canine psychology to ensure that your dog is trained with the least amount of force, and the highest amount of praise. We at Scheurman’s K9 Academy know it is necessary to look at the total relationship between the owner and the dog. Scheurman’s K9 Academy has made the same commitment to every student, to help our students achieve realistic goals, for themselves and their canine partner.
Our training programs are designed to give the dog owners real control over their dogs, and thereby making day to day interactions more enjoyable for both the dogs and their human families. It is based on pack theories, mutual respect, and leadership. It is not based on bribes or begging your dog to do something. While we do use positive reinforcement to teach certain behaviors, we always proof the dog with compulsion.
We teach one command one action. While this seems to be a hard concept for people to understand, it isn’t. You may only have the ability (time) to issue one and only one command to your dog, which is a matter of life and death. Your dog starts running for an open gate, in to a busy roadway, you may only get one chance to save his life, and you may not have a treat to bribe him with. This is when compulsive training is needed, this is when your dog needs a leader, and this is when you wished you had real control.
There is no hitting, or kicking dogs in any of our programs. We do use negative reinforcement, such as withholding praise, treats, or a collar correction. The most misunderstood aspect of compulsive training is praise. Compulsive training relies heavily on praise as a teaching tool.
Our training programs are proven to work, every student that has taken our competition class has placed. Meaning they have either earned first, second, or third place in formal obedience trials in the United Kennel Club or the American Kennel Club. Many of these students have earned titles with consecutive first places, but none have failed to obtain their goals.
