Tracking

Tracking comes in many different forms. There is sport tracking like that of the American Kennel Club, the United Kennel Club, and Schutzhund. There is animal tracking such as hunting bear, boar, pheasants, deer, ect.. The most popular is what I term man tracking such as Search and Rescue, tracking suspects for law enforcement, and Cadaver recovery.

Simply put, tracking is the dog following his nose, on a scent.

Any dog can track, the instinct is part of the dogs heritage. I would not train a Maltese to man track, nor would I train an English Mastiff to man track, not because the dog couldn't do it, but their size. Would I train these breeds for sport tracking? You bet I would.

The condensed version of sport tracking involves the dog following footprint to footprint, identifying dropped (placed) articles of the person being tracked. Since we at Scheurman's K9 Academy, do not do ANY form of training for hunting dogs, it will not be covered. Man tracking can be done footprint to footprint, air scenting, or a combination of the two.

Sport tracking is just that, a sport, time is not that important. Man tracking is life or death, the dog must work quickly but more important accurately. An air scenting dog is faster, then a footprint to footprint tracker, but only if the dog accurate.

As for our training programs for tracking, we offer group classes, private lessons, and board and trains. Whether you are looking to teach your dog to track to an AKC, UKC or Schutzhund title, or to find a lost or missing person, Scheurman's K9 Academy can help you achieve your goals.
